Small bathrooms are actually one of my favorite places to have a little fun with decor. You’re working with less space, so a bold color or quirky detail can make a big difference without taking over your whole home.
I also think a tiny bathroom is the perfect spot to try something you might be nervous to use elsewhere. Funky wallpaper, colorful tile, an odd-shaped mirror, or even a bright vanity can suddenly make that little room feel much more like you.
You don’t need to change everything at once, either. A few playful choices can give your bathroom plenty of personality while still keeping it practical and easy to use.
1. Try a Wild Retro Wallpaper
I love bold wallpaper in a small bathroom because you only need a little of it to make the room memorable. Try a funky floral, wavy geometric print, or retro pattern in mustard yellow, burnt orange, olive green, pink, and cream.
Keep the sink and toilet simple so the walls stay in focus, then add a round mirror and warm brass lighting. If the pattern feels like a lot, I’d use it on just one wall and paint the others a soft color pulled from the wallpaper.
2. Paint the Vanity a Juicy Color
Sometimes one bright vanity is all a plain bathroom needs. I’d go for tomato red, cobalt blue, sunny yellow, or deep raspberry against simple white walls and small ceramic tiles.
Add a playful mirror, a striped hand towel, and one little plant to give the room a layered look without filling every surface. Warm wall sconces are especially nice here because they soften those strong colors at night.
3. Mix Checkerboard Tile With Bright Accents
Checkerboard floors always catch my eye, especially when they aren’t the usual black and white. Pink and cream, green and white, or terracotta and beige tiles can give a small bathroom a fun vintage-inspired feel.
I’d keep the walls lighter and bring in a colorful bath mat, painted shelf, and a few pieces of quirky artwork. One thing I really like about this look is that the floor becomes the focal point, so you don’t need much extra decor.
4. Hang a Funky Wavy Mirror
You don’t have to redo your walls or floors to make a small bathroom feel different. A large wavy mirror above the sink can instantly bring in that funky look, especially in orange, pink, blue, or chunky natural wood.
Pair it with simple painted walls, a small ceramic sink, and one or two colorful towels. I’d also add warm globe lighting beside the mirror because the round shapes look so good next to those playful curves.
5. Go for a Color-Drenched Bathroom
If you really love color, I think a tiny bathroom is such a fun place to commit to one shade. Paint the walls, trim, and even the ceiling in a rich teal, plum, olive green, or warm coral for a cozy little jewel-box feel.
Then break up all that color with a white sink, chrome fixtures, and a patterned floor. You can also hang one piece of bright artwork or add a striped towel, but I’d keep the extras limited so the room still feels calm.
6. Add a Funky Gallery Wall
A small bathroom wall can become its own little gallery instead of sitting empty. I love the idea of mixing vintage prints, funny illustrations, colorful abstract art, and tiny framed pieces in different shapes and sizes.
Try frames in warm wood, red, yellow, black, and gold to make the arrangement feel collected rather than too matched. I’d place the gallery above the toilet or on the wall opposite the sink where it can stand out without getting in your way.
7. Bring in a Retro Pedestal Sink
There’s something so charming about a small pedestal sink, especially when you lean into a slightly retro look. Pair a white or colorful sink with patterned floor tile, pastel walls, and shiny chrome or brass fixtures.
Since pedestal sinks don’t give you much storage, I’d add a slim wall shelf or a small vintage cabinet nearby. A woven basket underneath can also hold extra towels while bringing a softer texture into the room.
8. Play With Colorful Grout
Colorful grout is one of those little details that I think people forget about. White tile with pink, blue, green, orange, or even yellow grout can look playful without making the whole bathroom feel busy.
Keep the rest of the room fairly simple and repeat the grout color in a hand towel, soap dish, or small piece of artwork. This works especially well if you want funky small bathroom ideas that don’t require lots of extra decor.
9. Add Stripes in an Unexpected Color
Stripes can make a tiny bathroom feel cheerful without needing lots of different patterns. I’d try wide vertical stripes in peach and cream, blue and pink, or olive and pale yellow for something a little different.
Simple white fixtures help balance the walls, while a rounded mirror and small vintage-style light keep everything feeling friendly. If you’re worried stripes will be too much, start with one wall behind the vanity instead of covering the whole room.
10. Use Open Shelving for Quirky Decor
Open shelving gives you storage, but it can also be part of the fun. I like slim wood or painted shelves filled with folded towels, little plants, colorful glass jars, candles, and one or two odd pieces you simply enjoy looking at.
You don’t need to fill every inch of the shelves. Leave some breathing room between pieces and mix useful bathroom items with decor so the display feels relaxed rather than cluttered.
11. Finish With a Funky Shower Curtain
A shower curtain might be the easiest place to bring a big pattern into a small bathroom. Try bold florals, colorful checks, wavy stripes, abstract shapes, or a playful retro print that pulls together the colors already in the room.
I’d let the curtain be the main focal point and keep nearby pieces a little quieter. Add a soft bath mat, a couple of matching towels, and warm lighting, and suddenly the whole bathroom feels intentional without needing a major makeover.
Small bathrooms don’t have to be plain just because there isn’t much room to decorate. I actually think the limited space makes every color, pattern, and quirky little detail feel more noticeable.
Take your time and add the things that genuinely make you smile. You can start with one funky mirror or shower curtain and build from there until the bathroom feels colorful, comfortable, and completely like you.
